Perspectives: Douglas C. Bloom and Liliana Porter
November 14, 2009—January 9, 2010
The Carrie Secrist Gallery is pleased to announce Perspectives, an exhibition of new paintings by Douglas C. Bloom and new prints and a video, Matinee/Matiné (2009), by Liliana Porter.
In his current work, Douglas C. Bloom is making an effort to bridge the representational and the abstract. Either in balance or discord, he is attempting to orchestrate a breakdown of traditional formal design elements, in addition to using the strengths of each style as a foundation for his work. In his most recent series that is on view at the Carrie Secrist Gallery, the paintings are an insider’s examination into the art world. From the crowded and chaotic atmosphere of a gallery opening to the critical moment of a collector contemplating a work of art, the art world acts as a case study for Bloom’s current series of paintings.
Acclaimed artist Liliana Porter has an expansive body of work that consistently expresses her interest in the philosophical and the absurd. Porter’s work playfully rebels against tradition, disrupts time, and challenges our notions of reality. Her work brings together the ridiculous with the logical, creating bizarre situations that lure us unwittingly in the world of her idiosyncratic cast of characters. Drawing from eclectic collections of figurines, knickknacks, toys, and souvenirs, Porter features these characters in unforeseen combinations and circumstances.
Matinee/Matiné (2009) is structured in a series of consecutive vignettes, some of them very brief. The characters, as in previous works, are inanimate objects, figurines, and adornments with an occasional appearance of a human hand. Within the video are references to personalities and political figures that remain in the collective memory including Che, JFK, Joan of Arc, and others.
